BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculation works

Prorate grant/basic/extra-weeks/dependants and PLA by course duration; subtract shared family and student contributions from means-tested maintenance; add eligible unprorated childcare, placement and DSA costs. Tuition is displayed separately.

Worked example

With no income or dependants and 30 weeks 3 days at home, the award is £2,384 basic maintenance plus the £1,081 grant: £3,465.

Example result: £3,465.00

Living at home, London or elsewhere

The basic award and extra-week rate depend on where you live and study. The same non-means-tested grant is shown separately so the means-test deduction remains visible.

Understanding the income input

Use the family income figure on the applicable NHSBSA assessment basis after permitted deductions. The calculator deliberately does not turn a salary into residual income: deductions and the correct assessment year must be established first.

Assumptions and rounding

  • England medical/dental student with full bursary entitlement in 2026/27.
  • Amounts are annual, except weekly childcare and per-journey/per-night expenses.

Questions about this calculator

Can I include part-time study and childcare?

Yes. Enter full-time-equivalent and actual course lengths. Childcare uses weekly actual cost, the eligible child count and the number of weeks.

Is university tuition paid to me?

No. It is shown separately from maintenance and expense support.
