BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculation works

Validate each date, replace current with the selected date, sort intervals and merge overlaps or adjacent intervals. Each merged inclusive interval contributes end − start + 1 days. Gaps = days from first start to last end − unique days.

Worked example

The union is 1 January 2020 to 31 March 2021 inclusive: 366 days in leap-year 2020 plus 90 days in early 2021. The 214 overlapping days count once.

Example result: 456 days

Concurrent roles count once

Working two jobs on the same day does not add a second day to calendar experience. The breakdown shows how much overlap was removed.

Continuous service has separate rules

An employment record can include gaps which legally preserve continuous employment, or days with special treatment. This neutral date counter cannot decide those rules.

Assumptions and rounding

  • Days are calendar days, including weekends and leave within a supplied employment period.
  • Approximate years use 365.2425 days, clearly separate from exact days.

Questions about this calculator

Does one day count if start and end match?

Yes, both endpoints are included, so it counts as one calendar day.

What happens to an invalid date?

It is rejected. For example, 29 February 2025 is not silently converted to March.
