BEHIND THE NUMBERS
How this calculation works
Worked example
Payroll average is 10 + 176/(22×8) = 11. External part-time average is 0.5 and contract average 31/31 = 1, giving 12.5 total.
Example result: 11
Use calendar days for payroll headcount
A month with 31 days uses 31 in the denominator, even if only 22 days are working days. For non-working days use the count required by the official instructions, normally carried from the preceding working day.
Different categories use different denominators
Part-time equivalents use the normal working-time calendar, while civil-contract averages use calendar days. A statutory shorter working week does not automatically make a worker fractional: check the instructions before moving them out of the full-count payroll.
Assumptions and rounding
- Each worker is assigned to the correct reporting category without double counting.
- Daily headcounts include the prescribed weekend/holiday treatment.
Questions about this calculator
Is average payroll headcount the same as average workforce?
No. The wider total also includes the eligible external part-time and civil-contract categories.
Should I round each daily count?
Enter the proper full-count headcount as whole people. The calculated averages retain fractions; apply the reporting form’s final rounding rule.
